Indonesian People’s Consultative Assembly Deputy Chairman Lestari Moerdijat said that the movement to prevent malaria must be consistent. This can be done by increasing the public’s understanding of the management of this disease.
“Although there is a trend towards reducing the number of malaria cases in the country, it turns out that Indonesia is still one of the contributors to the number of deaths due to malaria in the world. done on a large scale,” Lestari said in a written statement, Monday (29/4/2024).
On 25 April 2024, the Indonesian Ministry of Health recorded malaria cases in Indonesia reaching 418,546. The spread of cases includes Papua, East Nusa Tenggara, North Sumatra, East Kalimantan, Riau, South Sulawesi, Maluku, Gorontalo, West Java and the Special Region of Jakarta.
Meanwhile, the World Malaria Report 2023 reports that India and Indonesia still contribute about 94 percent of deaths from malaria in the entire WHO region of Southeast Asia.
Lestari or known as Rerie also expressed several ideas regarding the disease spread by the Anopheles mosquito. According to him, outreach measures to increase public understanding of malaria prevention and control must be part of a movement.
In addition, Rerie said that efforts to create a movement to create a healthy lifestyle is a step that can no longer be postponed. This is because the spread of the disease is becoming more widespread.
In addition, Rerie emphasized that creating a healthy lifestyle and environment is a strategic step to respond to various challenges that arise due to the spread of various diseases. In this case, this also includes diseases caused by climate and environmental changes that are currently occurring.
This member of the High Council of the NasDem Party expressed his hopes to stakeholders at the central and regional levels. He hopes that these stakeholders can continue to maintain consistency in efforts to improve lifestyle patterns and a healthy environment for the people in their own areas.
Rerie said that through the support of stakeholders’ capacities, efforts to eradicate several diseases, such as malaria, can run smoothly. In addition, efforts to create healthy, resilient and competitive human resources in the future can be realized immediately.
