Considering allowing cyclists in Oslo to cycle on red

In some countries, cyclists can drive to the right even when there is a red light.

Denmark changed the regulations in 2016 after a successful pilot project. In Paris, it has been allowed at certain intersections since 2015. Signs show cyclists where it is legal.

Now a possible pilot scheme can make it legal to cycle at a red light also in Oslo, writes Aftenposten.

Both the Ministry of Transport and Communications and the City of Oslo are positive about testing the solution.

– If there are sensible and good measures related to giving cycling some advantages in traffic, we are of course willing to consider them, says State Secretary Johan Vasara (Labor) in the Ministry of Transport to the newspaper.

Earlier this week, the ministry gave the Norwegian Public Roads Administration an assignment.

Together with the City of Oslo, the Norwegian Public Roads Administration will investigate whether it is possible to carry out a pilot project.

If possible, it may be allowed to cycle at a red light to the right at some intersections. If the results in Oslo are positive, the scheme can be extended.
