Conservative Ebrahim Raisi / Article has taken over the presidency of Iran

The ultra-conservative Ebrahim Raisi took over the presidency of Iran on Tuesday. In this position, he will replace the moderate Hasan Rohani, who signed a nuclear deal with six world powers in 2015.

Raisi, the former head of the Islamic Republic’s justice system, said that his priority as president would be to fight corruption and solve Iran’s economic problems. He also called on the United States to lift “tyrannical sanctions” against Iran.

It is not yet clear how Raisi’s presidency of Iran will affect Tehran’s indirect talks with Washington to restore the two countries’ membership in the nuclear deal.

Iranian presidential election in mid-June Raisi won 62% of the vote.

Raisi is considered close to 81-year-old Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Hamene, who has the most political power in Iran. Raisi, who has a deeply conservative view of many social issues, including the role of women in public life, has been described in the Iranian media as a possible successor to Hämeenlinna.
