Conservation Fishing Undertaken in Buttes-Chaumont Park to Transfer Fish to Other Bodies of Water

Before the lake in the Buttes-Chaumont park (Paris, 19th century) is completely emptied for work, a vast conservation fishing operation, organized by the city of Paris with the Fishing Federation of Paris and surrounding areas, has been carried out since Monday and for three days. The goal: to catch as many fish as possible and transfer them to other bodies of water such as the Bois de Boulogne, Bois de Vincennes, or Canal de l’Ourcq.

“We use the electric fishing method,” explains Adrien, one of the two project managers from the Fishing Federation who oversees the operations. “It is a method which is non-lethal, not to be confused with pulse trawl fishing which is now banned at European level,” he explains. This helps attract fish and then we catch them with a dip net.”

In the waters of Buttes-Chaumont, no real surprises on this first day of fishing: carp, of all sizes, a few gudgeon, roach, rudd… And a few “sun” perch, classified as undesirable in France, which will not be therefore not reintroduced into other lakes. The Buttes-Chaumont lake should be emptied soon and be dry from October to March.
