The renewed hardening of the fronts between London and Brussels on the Brexit issue has raised concerns about peace on the island in Ireland. Northern Ireland’s loyalists – the old Protestant paramilitary groups – have recently announced that they are no longer bound by the 1998 peace agreement.
That so-called Good Friday Treaty laid the basis for peaceful cooperation in Northern Ireland and on the entire “Green Island”. The threat from the loyalists is seen as the clearest sign yet of the current rise in tensions in Northern Ireland.
