UFC star Conor McGregor offered to buy Chelsea after it emerged that Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich had put the club up for sale. The Irishman made this interest public through his personal Twitter account and it has also been on that social network where he has been seen ‘exercising’ as Chelsea boss.
McGregor published an animation in which he can be seen as Chelsea manager speaking with Abramovich, Mason Mount or in the press room addressing the media. The success was an immediate success and already exceeds a million and a half views.
The Irish fighter showed his intentions through a tweet last Wednesday: “I want to explore this, Chelsea”tweeted in response to an image of a WhatsApp message from an unknown contact that read: “Chelsea for sale, 3 billion pounds [3.600 millones de euros]. Let’s buy”.
Those 3,600 million would be the amount from which Abramovich is supposed to be willing to negotiate the sale of the club, which bought in 2003 for £140m [168,5 millones de euros al cambio actual] and for which he has already rejected offers that exceeded 2,200 million [2.650 millones de euros].
McGregor is estimated to have a fortune of 135 million euros and he has already shown on occasion his interest in buying Manchester United, a team he is a follower of, or Celtic Glasgow, although his intentions did not go beyond words on social networks.
On April 20, 2021, McGregor tweeted: Hi guys, I’m thinking of buying Manchester United! What do you think?”. A follower asked him if he was still willing to buy the English team and the UFC star replied: “First came a conversation about Celtic, to be honest. To acquire the shares of Dermot Desmond. I am certainly interested in purchasing a sports team at some point! Both Celtic and Manchester United are teams that I definitely like. But I am open. I feel that I can do great things for a club”.
Now McGregor may think that with the sale of Chelsea he has presented himself with that moment of “doing great things for a club” and has revolutionized social networks by showing his interest in buying the club that Abramovich still owns.
