Connie Palmen stays with Prometheus after complaints about publisher Mai Spijkers | NOW

Connie Palmen, who has been publishing her books with Prometheus since the beginning of her writing career, informs NU.nl that she will remain associated with the publisher. Last week, Prometheus founder Mai Spijkers was discredited after sixteen former employees told de Volkskrant that Spijkers maintains a culture of fear at Prometheus.

“Mai Spijkers is more intelligent, caring, loyal and above all more reliable than anyone else,” says Connie Palmen. “And certainly his accuser, so my future is and will remain linked to that of Prometheus.”
NU.nl has also approached other Prometheus authors for a response.

Published last week Volkskrantarticle, former employees tell their story. They speak of, among other things, outbursts of anger, bullying and intimidation and of a culture of fear. He would berate, humiliate and fire employees for no valid reason.

The reason for the article was a essay from Ronit Palache, who worked at Prometheus between 2010 and 2019 as head of publicity and rights manager. She accuses her former boss of transgressive behavior and abuse of power.

The sentiment from the Volkskrant-article was, among other things, supported by author Emy Koopman, who for the time being is the only writer who has left the publishing house as a result. Other Prometheus authors, such as Professor Meindert Fennema, wrote on the matter and have not yet decided on their future.

Spijkers founded publishing house Prometheus in 1989, with the first successful publication The laws by Connie Palmen. Other well-known writers associated with the publishing house include Herman Brusselmans, Özcan Akyol and Esther Verhoef.
