He probably would have done better to move on. A 57-year-old American resident of the town of Trumbull, Connecticut, is facing criminal charges for theft, after having appropriated a bag filled with cash which he had found completely by chance in the street on May 30.
As related by Connecticut Post, that day, the fifties fell on the jackpot while leaving an appointment at the bank. “When I arrived in the parking lot, I saw something on the ground and there was no one around me, so I picked it up, says the person concerned, quoted by the local media. It’s not like if I had stolen something.”
“It’s like I won the lottery”
Once returned home, the individual did not however fail to notice that the bag contained a sum of around 5000 dollars. “I just took the money and didn’t ask myself any questions, explains the 50-year-old, who runs a dog training business. I don’t even know who it belonged to because I didn’t look. All I saw was cash. (…) It’s like I won the lottery.”
Far from falling from the sky, this money actually came from a municipal tax collection and had been misplaced during a delivery. An alert had been launched the day of the disappearance of the bag and an investigation had then been opened to try to understand what had happened. After several months of research, the police ended up finding the trace of the lost school bag on the CCTV images.
“I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong”
Filmed by cameras in the bank parking lot, the man who had taken the money was quickly identified and contacted. He then surrendered himself to the police, while claiming his innocence. “It’s not as if it was planned, everything happened in the moment, supports the fifties, always quoted by the Connecticut Post. If I had known it was a mistake, I would have returned. I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong.”

The curious justifications of the entrepreneur will not, however, exempt him from having to explain himself to the courts. While the police investigation continues to try to trace the exact sequence of events that led to the disappearance of the bag of money, the suspect has been charged with “3rd degree theft”. He is expected to be tried on September 5.
