On the left in yellow, accidents at the workplace, and on the right in blue, commuting accidents between home and work. Hands account for almost a quarter of workplace injuries.
“Prevention is a central and important subject. It is carried out in synergy with companies and with employees. “
Tekura Yp Seung, head of the occupational risk prevention service within the Social Security Fund (CPS), yesterday presented in Papeete, the fifth edition of the “Occupational health and safety” days.
Days scheduled from April 26 to 30 which, for the first time due to the epidemic context, will be “connected” days on Facebook and YouTube.
The new director of the CPS, Vincent Fabre, was present at his side, as well as the director of work, Valérie Bepoix and Tuterai Tumahai, chief medical officer of the medical control.
In 2003, CPS created the Occupational Risk Prevention Service, whose main mission is to support companies in controlling occupational risks.
Its objective is to reduce the frequency and severity of workplace accidents and occupational diseases.
The service also compiles statistics, carries out surveys and checks that employers observe the health and safety measures provided for by regulations.
Asked about the subject, the CPS yesterday recognized an unavoidable reality: more than 80% of companies, all sizes combined, do not comply with the regulations relating to fire risk, in any case in terms of personnel evacuation exercises, which are supposed to be organized every six months.
Finally, the service works to publicize prevention methods, through campaigns or any other advertising process, and promotes prevention education through grants.
Sharp decrease in occupational accidents
The first edition of the “Health and safety at work” days was held in 2011. “Since then, every two or three years, a new edition has been renewed,” explains the Fund.
“The program has been designed to provide participants with methodological and operational elements, and thus assist them in their risk prevention and control approach. “
According to the CPS, in 2020, the results of statistics of work accidents (AT) and occupational diseases (PD) show a decrease in accidents at work of nearly 19%, a decrease of 13% in accidents journey time, a particularly low level for occupational illnesses, a 3.5% decrease in the number of employees and finally a 7% decrease in the number of hours worked, all sectors of activity combined.
The CPS specifies that impacts against objects and falls are the main forms of accidents, with nearly 50% of cases concerned. Excessive efforts or false movements are concerned in 14% of cases. The parts of the body most exposed to accidents at work are the hands and fingers, with more than 23% of the total number, followed by the back, trunk and abdomen.
For commuting accidents, the lower limbs and back, trunk and abdomen account for nearly 60% of accidents.
“The construction sector has made a lot of progress,” noted Tekura Yp Seung, who praises the partnership with the labor management. And who explains that prevention is anything but an unnecessary expense: “It is above all investing in economic performance …”
