The relationship between UEFA and Conmebol is going through one of its best moments, and that was reflected this Monday, in an event in which both entities were part of the official inauguration of the joint office in London, with the presence of the Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin, president of UEFA and Alejandro Domínguez, the highest authority of Conmebol. In addition, Claudio Tapia said present and will be one of the highest authorities of this new entity.
To continue demonstrating the good relationship they have, the return of an old dream is sought in the short term: the Intercontinental Cup, for which they will seek to find a place in the tight schedules of both associations to play it again from 2023, because it could not continue to play the Club World Cup from that year on.
At the beginning of this year, there was the ratification of a Memorandum and work for different events together, at which time the search for these offices was decreed, which were inaugurated on the date of the date.
In any case, at a critical moment in relations with FIFA due to the resounding refusal of the South American and European soccer entities to the Biennial World Cup, the main issue that Gianni Infantino’s FIFA points to, there is a concrete and growing possibility for Conmebol and UEFA organize a Global Nations League played by all the South American associations and they are even working on a sketch to be able to bring it to reality as soon as possible.
Alejandro Domínguez highlighted the historic nature of this inauguration by saying that “CONMEBOL and UEFA have resolved to take their cooperation to a higher strategic level. We are the two continents with the greatest tradition and weight in the most popular sport on the planet, and while we are loyal rivals on the field of play, we are united in the understanding that football is a powerful force for building more tolerant, peaceful and plurals”.
For his part, President Ceferin remarked: “Building a fruitful and lasting relationship like ours was easy as we share the same love and passion for football. This shared office is the next symbolic step in the right direction for UEFA and Conmebol. It will help us work together to develop football in our confederations and beyond.”.
The first major event that both confederations will organize is the Finalissima: Argentina – Italy, for being champions of the Copa América and the European Championship, respectively, on June 1.
It is worth noting that, within the framework of the 72nd FIFA Congress that took place in Doha last week prior to the draw for the World Cup, Gianni Infantino removed from the agenda the possibility of discussing the biennial World Cup, to decompress the tension over the future international calendar from 2024.
