NEW YORK – Democratic congressmen Nydia M. Velázquez and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supported this Wednesday the alliance between the Puerto Rican Independence Party (PIP) and the Citizens’ Victory Movement (MVC), ahead of the general elections on 5 November in Puerto Rico.
“These young people from Puerto Rico need to be sure that they have to work hard, but that there is a system that is going to be with them and not going to work against them and, in that sense , in that request for change, I have decided that the best option for the people of Puerto Rico is represented here,” said Velázquez at a press conference in San Juan.
Present at the appearance was Federation candidate for resident commissioner in Washington, Ana Irma Rivera Lassén, and the candidate for mayor of San Juan, Manuel Natal, both from MVC.
The Federation’s candidate for governor, Juan Dalmau, of the PIP, was not present.
Velázquez emphasized that it is “a historic moment for Puerto Rico” because of the union between the two parties and that the bipartisanship “has failed the people of Puerto Rico.”
The candidates for Governor of the main traditional parties on the island are Jenniffer González, from the New Progressive Party (PNP); and Jesús Manuel Ortiz, from the Popular Democratic Party (PPD).
The conference confirmed to citizens that if the Federation wins the elections, “they will not lose Medicare” while they are in the Congress of the United States, as the opponents of the Federation said.
Regarding the policies made by the rest of the candidates for the Governor, Velázquez emphasized that “intimidation campaigns will not scare” her or Puerto Ricans.
“Don’t be afraid to vote, let there be hope. Puerto Rico will not surrender or sell out. We are going to win,” said Velázquez.
For her part, Ocasio-Cortez highlighted the problem of corruption in Puerto Rican politics and said that “the crisis of corruption is also a crisis of democracy” and, therefore, “change is needed.”
“It is a very important election because this is one of the opportunities we have to protect our island and to have the opportunity to have Puerto Rico for Puerto Ricans,” said Congress.
“The alliance between the PIP and MVC has shown us that there can be a path to a future for all Puerto Ricans, not just the rich and powerful. Today I am proud to support and support Juan Dalmau for the governor, for his courage and confidence. leadership” mentioned Ocasio-Cortez.
