Congressman Santos Scandal: Corruption and Fraud Lead to Expulsion

The 35-year-old Santos was elected to Congress in 2022. Santos’ victory in New York state helped give the Republican Party a narrow majority in the House of Representatives. But it was soon discovered that he had lied about his job, education and religion and much more.

Santos has been charged with campaign theft, credit card fraud, money laundering and identity theft. A congressional investigation into ethics violations found overwhelming evidence of wrongdoing, and Santos was accused of attempting to fraudulently use his seat in Congress.

“My next former colleague is out of touch with reality. He has fabricated his whole life,” Republican Mark Molinaro said during the debate over Santos’ ouster. Other members of Santos’ party also criticized him for lying and cheating.

Santos, who has pleaded not guilty to the charges against him, used campaign donations for Botox treatments and visiting a pornographic website, as well as luxury goods from Italy and vacations in the Hamptons and Las Vegas, a congressional ethics committee has found.

A two-thirds vote of the House of Representatives was required to remove Santos. The first two attempts failed to garner enough votes, but in the third vote, which took place after the investigative report was made public, Santos was expelled from Congress.
