Mexico City. Speaking on behalf of Morena during the installation of Congress, Senator Ignacio Mier stressed that during the ordinary period that began today, judicial reform and other initiatives that make up President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s Plan C will be discussed and approved, “in accordance with what is established by the regulations, parliamentary practice and the legislative process.”
The discussion of judicial reform, he stressed, will be carried out “upholding what is established in Article 39 of the Constitution, which clearly establishes that national sovereignty resides essentially and originally in the people, and that all public power emanates from them and is instituted for their benefit.
“Today, more than ever, we must remember that our mandate emanates from the sovereignty of the People and that our main responsibility is to serve the interests of the people of Mexico. Never again to serve foreign interests or powers that have not been elected by the people.”
By stating the position of the Morena groups in both chambers, he also took the opportunity to respond to criticism from the opposition, especially from the PAN, and to emphasize that “the only unfair thing in the electoral process” of June 2, “is that the people of Mexico gave us six out of every 10 votes. That was unfair.”
Referring specifically to the intervention of PAN member Nohemí Luna, Senator Mier said that “it was unfair that the popular will reduced to its true expression those who have repeatedly demonstrated against the people” and added in the same tone: “I agree that they are opposition and I hope they continue to be so for many six-year terms.”
She then referred to the constitutional reforms: “Let there be no doubt, Plan C is the majority mandate of the people. For this reason, it is our legislative agenda and will become, with the qualified vote in both chambers, programs, budgets and actions of the next and historic government of the republic that will be headed by the first female president of Mexico, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo.”
He noted that the Chamber of Deputies’ board of directors has deposited the opinions approved by the Constitutional Affairs Committee, 13 of which were approved unanimously and 4 with the majority vote of our coalition.
“We will consolidate the model of citizen security and peace building, with the reform of the National Guard, which will provide legal certainty, civil training and respect for human rights, always for the benefit of the heritage and integrity of Mexicans.”
He also referred to the reform of the rights of indigenous and Afro-descendant peoples, forgotten and marginalized for centuries, which, he said, is equally important.
Senator Mier stressed that “three months after the elections, some still wonder why Morena, the PT and the Green Party achieved such a resounding victory, winning the presidency of the Republic so that, for the first time, a woman can occupy this position, as well as the majority of local and municipal governments and the constitutional majority in this Congress. The answer is simple: we listen to the people and, without reservation, we join their struggles, desires and hopes” –
He said that Morena legislators “feel proud and grateful to continue with the transformation of Mexico. We will do so responsibly, but firmly, promoting our project without being overwhelming, but in accordance with the sovereign mandate of the people to continue transforming this country.”
He made a “respectful call” to the opposition, so that regardless of their colors and ideologies, they leave aside personal or group interests and stand on the side of the people.
And to further anger the opposition, he concluded his speech with the cry “It is an honour to be with Claudia today”, which was echoed by the members of his majority benches.
