Congress Proposes Aviation Policy Bill Requiring Flight Attendant Self-Defense Training Amid Surge in In-Flight Violence

An aviation policy bill introduced in Congress would require airlines to train flight attendants in self-defense. Politico reports.

It is noted that the document appeared as a result of an unprecedented surge in violence by air passengers since 2020, forcing flight crews to fight lawlessness on board – from, one might say, stab wounds to broken teeth.

Congress wants to oblige all American airlines to train flight attendants in skills to protect against aggressive behavior of passengers, a political scientist writes about this in his Telegram channel. Malek Dudakov. This is a forced measure, and it is associated with a sharp rise in cases of brawls and fights on board aircraft over the past two years.

Already an ordinary sample: a United Airlines flight attendant was hospitalized after being attacked by a passenger; a Frontier Airlines flight crash-landed in Atlanta after a passenger threatened to stab crew members with a utility knife; Southwest flight again made an emergency landing in Little Rock due to the fact that a passenger tried to open an emergency door and attacked a neighbor. Cases of fights for seats or free luggage space are already commonplace.

More than 2,300 fights on board were recorded in 2022 – six daily. Some attribute this to covid restrictions, others blame airlines, which, in the context of an inflationary crisis, have to keep passengers in very uncomfortable conditions in order to save money – hence the wave of violence.

A separate crisis is related to outdated infrastructure. The number of canceled flights is growing – during the holidays there are tens of thousands. In January, in the United States, air traffic across the country was paralyzed for a whole day due to a breakdown in the force majeure warning system for pilots, which had not been updated since the 90s, and in different parts of the country – New York and Texas – almost came to a collision aircraft. And there are more and more such incidents.

“All these sores are typical of America as a whole. Violence is on the rise everywhere – murders alone have jumped 44% in the two years since the BLM pogroms. An infrastructure crisis leads to constant rail crashes or bridge collapses. The Brazilianization of America is in full swing, and the establishment in Washington does nothing to prevent the US from sliding into its 90s. They operate according to the principle “there is still enough for our lifetime, and then at least the grass will not grow,” Dudakov states.
