New York Attorney General Letitia James on Friday called on Congress to make sure everyone in the country has access to the COVID-19 vaccine, and urged federal lawmakers to draft legislation to do so.
The goal is to ensure that African American and Latino communities can obtain the vaccine, which will be distributed initially to nursing home residents and frontline healthcare workers beginning around December 15.
James, along with a dozen state attorneys general, wrote a letter to Congress asking them to codify an interim federal rule that provides for Medicare beneficiaries to receive the vaccine at no cost and to adequately fund programs to ensure that people who lack insurance do not pay administrative fees for the vaccine.
“The end of the COVID-19 pandemic is in sight, but we cannot eliminate this disease without equitable access to the vaccine,” said James.
