Bengaluru: Congress MLA and Malayali UT Khader will be the speaker in Karnataka. It is reported that the High Command has approved the appointment of Khader as Speaker. Fifty-three-year-old Khader was the deputy opposition leader in the last assembly. UT Khader will be the first person from a minority community to become Speaker in Karnataka. UT Khader, a member of the Kasaragod Uppala Pallath family, is the sitting MLA from Mangaluru constituency in Dakshina Kannada district.
Randeep Singh Surjewala, who is in charge of Karnataka, and KC Venugopal, the general secretary of the organization, had a direct discussion with Khader. Khader will submit nomination papers today. Speaker election is on Wednesday. Senior party leaders like RV Deshpande, HK Patil, TB Jayachandra, Basavaraj Rayareddy, BR Patil and KN Rajanna were also considered for the post of Speaker. K.J.George, a Malayali, was sworn in as a minister in the Siddaramaiah government the other day.
Khader has five seats in the Karnataka Assembly this time. Khader defeated BJP’s Satish Kumpala by 22,790 votes. Khader entered politics holding the hand of his father UT Farid, who was a native of Uppala Thurthi and MLA from Mangaluru. After the death of his father, he contested the by-elections held in 2007 and entered the Legislative Assembly for the first time. He was the food minister in the Siddaramaiah government.
