Congress: 61 deputies achieved their re-election; 99 will do it for the first time

The General Elections of June 25 left many surprises, among them that there will be 99 new deputies and 61 were re-elected. Of which, 128 will be men and 32 will be women.

Although they will be new, they are already known because they held public positions in government institutions. Even for being relatives of political figures who remain in public opinion.

Although they are not new, Calos López Girón and Sergio Celis return to the Congress when electing them as deputies, the first for the Valor-Unionist Coalition for Quiché and the second for Sacatepéquez and for the Nosotros party.

On behalf of the National Unity of Hope (UNE), the name of Lourdes Teresita de León Torres, daughter of presidential candidate Sandra Torres, who will seek the presidency in the second round, stands out.

There is also Sergio Enríquez Garzaro, son of the apostle Sergio Enríquez, leader of the Eben Ezer ministries.

Nadia de León, also the daughter of Torres, will occupy a place in Congress for the Nosotros group, UNE’s satellite party.

On the side of the Seed Movement, Jonathan Menkos stands out, who participated as an analyst for the Central American Institute for Fiscal Studies (ICEFI) and who in the 2019 elections proclaimed him as vice-presidential candidate for Thelma Aldana, former attorney general, a participation that did not materialize.

José Carlos Sanabria, will also integrate the Congress, he is a political scientist and was part of the team of the Association for Research and Social Studies (ASIES).

Known former MPs

Julio Héctor Estrada will also take office in Congress with the Cabal bench, he was Minister of Finance in the government of Jimmy Morales, and in the last elections presidential candidate for Renewal Commitment and Order (CREO).

Sandra Jovel will represent the Valor-Unionist Coalition, she was Minister of Foreign Relations in the government of Jimmy Morales; she was one of the voices most critical of the work of the extinct International Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG).

Among other new deputies listed is the former director of the National Civil Police (PNC), Nery Ramos, who won a seat for the tenth legislature with the Azul political party.

On this side there is also the current one from Ipala, Chiquimula, Esduin Javier Javier, known as “Tres Kiebres” when he got a deputation with the Cambio party of the sons of Manuel Baldizón.
