Felix Tshisekedi, the incumbent president of the Democratic Republic of Congo, has been re-elected for a second term in the elections. According to the country’s election commission, Tshisekedi won more than 73 percent of the vote. The opposition has dismissed the elections as fraudulent.
According to the results, businessman Moise Katumbi finished far behind Tshisekedi with 18 percent of the votes, while Martin Fayulu would have received 5 percent. Nobel Peace Prize winner Denis Mukwege, a doctor known for treating women sexually assaulted in eastern Congo, reportedly received less than 1 percent.
President Félix Tshisekedi came to power in 2019 after controversial elections. Congo has a history of controversial elections that can end in violence. Many Congolese have little confidence in government institutions.
Before the results were announced, opposition candidates, including Katumbi, said they rejected the results. They called on their supporters to take to the streets to protest after the announcement of the provisional results. Katumbi previously announced that he would not appeal the result because he has no confidence in government institutions.
Out onto the street
“We categorically reject the sham elections and their results,” the main opposition candidates said in a joint statement. They demanded that new elections be held with a new electoral body on a date to be agreed upon by all.
“We call on our people to take to the streets en masse after the declaration of election fraud,” they said. Congo’s government has rejected previous calls to hold new elections.
