Félix Tshisekedi, son of “eternal opponent” Etienne Tshisekedi, came to power almost two years ago, with the support of his predecessor Joseph Kabila, who himself managed to keep much of his position of power.
Tshisekedi had been declared the winner of the presidential election by the Electoral Commission, although he had received fewer votes than opposition candidate Martin Fayulu, according to many observers and the Congolese bishops. The latter then referred to “an electoral coup d’état”.
It has taken months for Tshisekedi to succeed in forming a government. But the president has not really turned out to be a political potter, partly because he constantly has to take his powerful predecessor into account.
