Congo Basin Forests: increasing international funding flows – AGP

Libreville, August 2, 2024 (AGP) – WWF, in collaboration with the Central African Forestry Commission (COMIFAC), organized this Friday, August 2, 2024 in Akanda, a national workshop to discuss the increase in international climate and biodiversity flows. funding for Congo Basin forests.

How to attract more international funding to the Congo Basin? This is the question that biodiversity experts tried to answer in this workshop. The aim was to promote the ownership of the COMIFAC-WWF Initiative by the countries of the Congo Basin and to reflect on the management of climate finance and biodiversity in relation to the forests of this region.

“The efforts made by Gabon have not been rewarded with their true value. The expected funding after long negotiations is still not forthcoming,” said Nathalie Nyare, WWF’s national director.

For Auguste Ndouna, the national coordinator of COMIFAC, the study will present different approaches that will allow African countries to apply appropriate financing methods.

The workshop was opened by the Minister of Water and Forests, Brigadier General Maurice Ntossui Allogo, together with his colleague from Public Accounts, Charles M’ba, and the national director of WWF.

As a reminder, the COMIFAC-WWF initiative comes from a study showing that the Congo Basin receives very little international funding, with a funding rate of just 4%, much lower than that of other institutions.
