Ellery Cairo did not know what to do on May 2, 2010. The wing attacker played for NAC Breda, which FC Twente had to keep from the first league title in club history.
The 41-year-old from Rotterdam did not find that easy, because he had played for FC Twente between 2000 and 2003. “I still had a lot of friends and acquaintances living in Enschede who are all supporters of FC Twente,” said Cairo, who came to Twente opposite club magazine De Schaal, speaking of ‘a confusing day’.
The then winger started as a reserve and was happy with that. Halfway through, however, he came within the lines, at a score of 0-1. “At one point I had to warm up and I thought, please don’t let me get in.” Cairo still came within the lines, but did not make much impression during his substitution. “It was very strange. I think I shot once, but not with full conviction. Not consciously, of course, I didn’t play my best game.”
