Confronting the Psychological Impact of Cancer: Tips and Advice for Patients and their Families

Interviewed by Maria Khayami:

Detection of cancer causes feelings of fear of death and the suffering resulting from treatment. The affected person and his family are greatly affected, and psychologists advise some ways to confront it and work to defeat it. Is there a specific way to inform the patient about his injury?

Psychotherapist Martine Al-Zoghbi explains that we must study the psychology and personality of the patient, and we must study the strength of his personality and his acceptance of things. Telling some people about such topics may lead to suicide or depression, and the doctor must build a relationship with the patient before telling him, to choose the appropriate method and time.

She confirmed in an interview with the IMLebanon website that psychological follow-up is important from the moment the infection is confirmed, for the patient and his family, because the patient has many questions, and may enter a stage of depression and fear of what is coming, and therefore psychological follow-up is very important.

The psychological therapist stressed that “the patient’s family needs psychological support as well, as fear of what is coming and depression will affect them as well as the patient, and perhaps more, and to explain how to deal with the patient.” Some people start treating the patient as if he is a child, or they say to him things like: “There is nothing wrong with you,” and they put him in a stage of denial, and this is wrong. Therefore, explaining to the family how to deal with the patient is important.”

She added: “The family must act on the basis that the patient is with them today, and they must benefit from every moment with him, apologize to him for every mistake they made, tell him how much they love him, and share what life did not allow them to do.”
In conclusion, Al-Zoghbi explains that there are not specific psychological symptoms that appear in everyone. Some enter a state of depression and surrender, while others resist and find a glimmer of hope in every situation and insist on fighting and eliminating the disease.
