Conflicting Protests Emerge in Tri-State Area amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

The war between Israel and Hamas has generated different protests in the tri-state area with conflicting opinions on both sides of the armed conflict.

One of them was Tuesday night in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, where a vigil for Israel was held in which Mayor Eric Adams participated. Likewise, in New York City and Paterson, New Jersey, there were displays of solidarity for the cause of the Palestinians.

“We are here to demand freedom for the people of Palestine, and to say that the world stands with you and stands behind you and we are going to be here in the streets to fight for you,” said Richard Merino, who supports Palestine.

“I feel sad for everything that is happening with Israel, it has the right to defense, the world should not allow these barbarities in this modern century, which we must each wake up,” said Bernard Yacco Muñoz, who supports Israel.

UN humanitarian aid agencies say hundreds of thousands of civilians in the Gaza Strip have fled their homes amid Israeli airstrikes as part of a counter-offensive in the war against Hamas.

The Gaza Strip is under siege and the Israeli army has tightened the siege, cutting off electricity and blocking supplies of food, water and fuel.

For its part, the Islamist militant group Hamas is threatening to execute 130 hostages it says it has in its possession if Israel attacks civilian populations without warning.

The death toll is rising after Saturday’s violent raid. The most recent balance is over sixteen hundred on both sides. The latest numbers confirmed as of 10:45 a.m. ET Tuesday: at least 849 Palestinians, more than 900 Israelis dead.

For his part, at least eleven Americans are among the dead in Israel, said President Joe Baden who will speak on television in the coming hours.
