Confiscated Cars from Drunk and Drugged Drivers Being Sold by NRA – First Public Auction Details

More than 170 confiscated cars from drunk and drugged drivers have already been handed over to the NRA to be sold. Five months after the changes in the Criminal Code, which obliged the court to confiscate the cars of proven drunk and drugged drivers, it is time for the first public auction, Nova TV reported.

On January 15, the bids for two cars will be opened in Burgas. One is more than 24 years old, with a starting price of BGN 1,200, and the other is more than 27 years old for BGN 1,000. “Offers are submitted in advance. In practice, the participation of a candidate-buyer can be done without leaving this room,” said Stanislav Hristov, director of the State Receivables Directorate, NRA.
It turns out that not all repossessed cars will be auctioned. “Cars that are in better condition can be used by the state. The state, as the owner, first assesses whether the car will not serve any state department,” he explained.

Vratsa is the next regional city that announces two cars and one motorcycle for sale. “All the cars are old. They were manufactured before 2000,” added Hristov.

And while the bidding for the confiscated vehicles has already started, it is still too early to assess the result of the measure, claims lawyer Ludmil Rangelov. “Once a person has developed to the point where they can afford to be a road user who can even cross their mind that they can drive after drinking and drugs, this prevention is really long overdue,” he explained.
According to Rangelov, not the severity of the punishment, but the speed of the process is the key to real prevention on the road. “This does not exist anywhere in the civilized world. One such solution to this issue. Anyone who drives a motor vehicle in such a condition, as far as he thinks soberly, is in no way seen in the category of “perpetrators” of traffic accidents,” said the lawyer.
There is no legal impediment to the person from whom the car was repossessed entering the auction and buying it back.
