Confirming new samples: soil remediation standards not exceeded…

The first results of samples that soil remediation expert Arcadis took on behalf of Ovam in Antwerp, Beveren and Zwijndrecht, show that in the vicinity of the 3M site the soil remediation standard is not exceeded in residential areas, but in agricultural and nature areas.

This is reported by the cabinet of Flemish Minister for the Environment Zuhal Demir (N-VA). The results are in line with the samples that the municipality of Zwijndrecht had taken separately.

‘It is important to indicate that on the basis of these samples it is not yet possible to make a comprehensive statement as to whether or not there is a need for remediation,’ says Demir’s cabinet. ‘It cannot be concluded from the samples that there is an immediate need for remediation.’ The results will now be discussed further with all parties involved.

The study includes 11 samples that were taken at various locations on the territory of Antwerp, Beveren and Zwijndrecht, in agricultural areas, nature reserves, industrial areas and recreational areas. In industrial areas, recreation areas and in the center of Zwijndrecht, the measured values do not exceed the soil remediation standard, in agricultural and nature areas they do. Demir’s cabinet emphasizes that the standards used are very strict. It concerns the design test values for PFOS that the Ovam published on April 1, 2021.

Risk analysis

The samples must now undergo a risk analysis. For example, the FASFC and the Agency for Care and Health will investigate to what extent measured concentrations can pose a problem for crops and crops. In the meantime, the previously announced precautions remain in effect.

‘These first samples indicate that the contamination can vary greatly,’ concludes Minister Demir. ‘In any case, the measurements go further in order to obtain a comprehensive picture of any environmental and health risks.’
