The European Football Union (UEFA) has confirmed a four-match distance for Kemar Roofe of the Glasgow Rangers, who injured Prague goalkeeper Ondřej Kolář in the March match of the European League against Slavia. Roofe hit Kolář with a kick in the head and caused a fracture in his face, the Czech goalkeeper has been catching in a protective mask and helmet ever since.
The Rangers considered the punishment too severe for their player and appealed against it. However, UEFA confirmed the sentence imposed on April 13. Roofe will miss the Scottish champions in the Champions League, which coach Steven Gerrard’s charges will start in the third preliminary round.
The controversial retaliation of the EL round of 16 at Ibrox Stadium culminated in an incident in which Slavic defender Ondřej Kúdela offended the dark-skinned home player Glen Kamara. UEFA punished the Czech tracker for racist insult with a ten-match distance, which will deprive the Slavic player of, among other things, the European Championship. Kamara received a three-match penalty for attacking Kudely in the bowels of the stadium after the match.
Koudela appealed against the distance, as did the Rangers against the punishment for Kamara. The outcome of these appeals is not yet known.
