Confirmed Cases of Bovine Viral Disease in Korea: Current Crisis Alert and Quarantine Efforts

A confirmed case of bovine viral disease has been reported in Korea.

According to Korean media such as Yonhap News, today (21st) the Korean quarantine authorities raised the crisis alert for lumpy skin disease, a bovine viral disease, to ‘serious’ and began quarantine efforts.

Previously, the Korea Agriculture, Forestry and Livestock Quarantine Headquarters confirmed lumpy skin disease in four cattle being raised in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province yesterday (20th) and culled about 40 cattle.

Subsequently, another case was confirmed today in Pyeongtaek, Gyeonggi-do and Dangjin, South Chungcheong Province.

Lumpiskin disease is a viral disease that only infects cattle by blood-sucking insects such as mosquitoes, and causes high fever and skin nodules 2 to 5 cm in diameter.

In particular, infected cows are said to show symptoms such as reduced milk production, miscarriage, and infertility. The mortality rate is about 10% or less.

Currently, the Korean government has designated lumpy skin disease as a type 1 livestock infectious disease.

According to Yonhap News, Prime Minister Han Deok-soo ordered on this day, “The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs should work closely with local governments and make every effort to implement initial quarantine, including culling cattle raised on outbreak farms, movement control, inspection and disinfection, etc. in accordance with the emergency action guidelines.” I did.
