Confirmation hearing for Lee Dong-gwan, candidate for chairman of Korea Communications Commission, reveals attempts to control media coverage

Here’s the next news.

On this Friday, the 18th, a confirmation hearing will be held for Lee Dong-gwan, a candidate for the chairman of the Korea Communications Commission.

However, documents were confirmed that when Candidate Lee was the Blue House spokesman for the Lee Myung-bak administration, the spokesperson’s office separately classified and managed journalists who were cooperative with the regime, planned articles favorable to the regime, and requested cooperation in reporting.

This is the exclusive report of reporter Koh Eun-hee.

In the past official documents, other circumstances appear.

In 2009, then Blue House spokesman Lee Dong-gwan organized the documents that were named as reporters, VIPs, or journalists who were targeted for calls of encouragement from then-President Lee Myung-bak.

It was written about a president of an evening newspaper that he ‘actively responded to the request for cooperation in planning articles and editorial reporting’ with a ‘friendly stance’ toward VIPs.

He even attached a specific example, saying that it was reported because the Blue House spokesperson’s office requested cooperation in planning and reporting.

Among them were articles focusing on the violent response of evicted residents during the Yongsan disaster.

It was also confirmed that the internal trends of the media and the political tendencies of journalists were identified and managed separately.

In the case of the president of a daily newspaper, the reason for the selection was that he had ‘concentrated on clearing up the remnants of the old leftist government’ and ‘steadfastly tried to correct the tone despite opposition from the leftists’.

Other media executives were also included in the target of encouragement, saying that they were classified as ‘pro-Park propensity, but their propensity changed due to sympathy and support for the VIP’s state affairs’.

In response to KBS’ inquiry about the document, Candidate Lee Dong-gwan said, “I have not ordered the writing of the document or received a report on it,” and said that tasks such as checking the media trend were “normal tasks of the press secretary’s office at the time and were handled in the working-level.” I answered.
