Confirm a new side effect of the COVID vaccine

The vaccination program against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 is now approaching a year and a half in Spain, after end of December 2020 the first doses will be inoculated. Since then they have been managed more than 94 million vaccines, which have served to immunize some 40 million people in Spain with the complete guideline. And of these, almost two thirds correspond to Pfizer (62 million), far ahead of the rest of the vaccines, Moderna, AstraZeneca and Janssen.

On all of them, except Janssen, the international health authorities have detected new side effects, such as with urinary urgency, myocarditis, and overactive bladder. This is confirmed by a recent report published by the Postgraduate Institute of Clinical Medicine of the Kaohsiung Medical University in Taiwan. According to this center, vaccines are “significantly” associated with problems with the lower urinary tract (LUTS).

The study, published in the journal Journal of Clinical Medicine from Japan, reveals changes in patients’ urinary urgency and frequency. Participated in the research 889 volunteers, who were inoculated with the COVID-19 vaccines and that they had not undergone any urological procedures in the past three months. The distribution of the vaccines was as follows: 65.9% received AstraZeneca (586), 29.2% (260) from Pfizer and the remaining 4.9% (89) from Moderna.

Results

The results of the study revealed that these “self-reported” adverse events related to urineappeared after one of the COVID vaccines appeared in the 13.4% of patients. Of these, 5.5% chose to seek medical help. “Our findings showed that after vaccination against Covid-19, up to 13.4 percent of 889 participants revealed deterioration in LUTS of storage”, indicate the authors of the study.

In parallel, overactive bladder syndrome prior to vaccination was later associated with an increased risk of worsening of storage LUTS, especially with regard to urinary urgency and frequency. Specifically, a study in the journal JAMA Cardiology ensures that myocarditis or overactive bladder is more frequent after the second dose.

Myocarditis and overactive bladder

The first effect is the inflammation of the heart, which can lead to decreased pumping of the heart muscle or the appearance of arrhythmias. Its origin is usually in a virus or the reaction to some medication, and its main symptoms are chest pain, breathing problems, fatigue, and irregular heartbeat.

On the other hand, overactive bladder is a almost extreme need to urinate, more constantly than usual. It can be caused by some diseases, such as diabetes or neurological disorders, but also by various infections or tumors.
