The Stade Malherbe Caen will he be the only club on the bridge this weekend? It is possible, but the uncertainties remain numerous the day after the announcement of the reconfinement by Emmanuel Macron.
Amateur sport suspended
One thing is certain: for a little over a month at least (until December 1, 2020 for now), amateur sport will be at a standstill. Whether it is indoor disciplines, such as handball and basketball, or outdoor sports, starting with football, all non-professionals give up. Therefore, there will not be a sixth round of the Coupe de France this weekend. However, there is one exception: futsal. In theory, Hérouville can continue to play in D1. The club is however awaiting answers from its Town Hall.
Roxana Maracineanu, Minister Delegate for Sports, announced on the night of Wednesday to Thursday the maintenance of professional competitions. She said it before the National Assembly. “The coming weeks will be tough economically but also humanely. This is why I wanted to confirm to you that the continuity of the sport which is practiced like a profession is assured today. “
The pros will be able to continue to practice their profession
Who is concerned in Caen? Stade Malherbe, of course, but also Caen Basket Calvados, Caen Handball, Caen TTC, Hockey Club de Caen and USO Mondeville. These clubs operate at competition levels listed as professional by the ministry. In addition, and above all, their players have employment contracts. However it is well stipulated:
High level athletes and professional athletes will be able to continue training. And they will also be able to continue to compete since travel for professional reasons is authorized.
If Ligue 2 will continue, because TV rights are essential to the survival of clubs, the question surrounds other practices. In question: all the matches will have to take place behind closed doors, confinement obliges. But ticketing is an important source of income for these structures.
Is a closed session possible?
The French Handball Federation was the first to suspend its competitions (from National 1, the higher levels being governed by the National Handball League) for two weeks. The measure is expected to be extended until the end of the calendar year. The CBC and USOM are awaiting a federal decision. The “USOM community” will be consulted, indicates President Olivier Liberge, but the positioning of the FFBB will obviously take precedence. The federation announced the postponement of the women’s Ligue 2 matches this weekend. The Drakkars say they are “ready to take a month in camera under certain conditions”. But they too are awaiting the return of their federation, which will meet on Friday October 30 at the latest. Same case for Caen TTC.
