Athlete Abdi Nageeye wants to write history and become the first Dutchman to win the New York marathon on Sunday. The 32-year-old Dutch runner of Somali descent thinks he can do it. His silver medal in the Olympic marathon has given him the necessary confidence.
His biggest competitor in the 50th edition of the 42.195 kilometer classic through the American metropolis is normally Kenenisa Bekele. The 39-year-old Ethiopian has the best time of 2.01.41 and ran the Berlin marathon just six weeks ago. Still, the multiple Olympic and world champion at 5000 and 10,000 meters thinks that he has recovered sufficiently for another top performance.

The New York Marathon had to postpone its anniversary last year due to the corona pandemic. This year the event can continue, albeit with some restrictions. Still, more than 30,000 runners are expected to start the race, which traditionally starts on Staten Island and finishes in Central Park. The course record is 2:05:06 and has been held by Kenyan Geoffrey Mutai since 2011.
