Star Canadian swimmer Mary-Sophie Harvey has announced that she was drugged during the recent world championships in Budapest.
The 22-year-old native of Quebec celebrated the bronze medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the championship in Budapest on June 22.
She spent the last evening of her stay in the Hungarian capital with friends – and still remembers nothing of it. “I have about a six-hour window,” Harvey admitted.
She has no idea what she was doing or how she got to her hotel room where she woke up. She had a number of bruises on her body, suffered a concussion and injured her ribs.
“In the end, I went to the hospital, where doctors and psychologists took care of me. They gave me the best possible care,” the Canadian swimmer wrote on Instagram.
According to available information, it looks like someone threw drugs into her drink during the evening. “They told me that it happens more often than we think and that I was kind of lucky to get away with only bruised ribs and a mild concussion,” Harvey added.
Although she had heard of similar cases, she never thought it would happen to her. “I thought I was safe. That this could never happen to me. Especially when I was with friends. But it happened…” confided the participant of last year’s Olympics in Tokyo.
According to Harvey, the number of such cases is growing dramatically, as evidenced by the responses on her social networks, and the issue is still not talked about enough.
“I wish someone had come and taught me before that night. To anyone reading this – please be careful,” the swimmer pleaded.
“For a while I debated whether or not to post this. But I’ve always been honest with you all and unfortunately these situations happen too often for me to stay silent,” she explained.
The International Swimming Federation has also started to deal with her case. “We have taken note of the disturbing news about Mary-Sophia Harvey and her health. We are in contact with the Canadian Swimming Association and the Hungarian Organizing Committee. An independent investigator has been commissioned to look into the matter,” the British BBC quoted the swimming federation as saying.
