On the occasion of the European Heritage Days, attend this conference illustrated by Jean-Charles Jacques, architect-urban planner, organized by the Maison de l’architecture de Bourgogne in partnership with Latitude 21. In this first intervention, we will try to bring unknown pioneering architects out of oblivion and highlight the little-known ones.
In the 19th century, the profession of architect appeared as a profession for men and only men took up this career. More than the aesthetic or technical aspect, it is rather the relational side that seems to be the main obstacle to the arrival of women in this profession. The problems of access to orders, worksite management or branch management are considered prohibitive for women. Nevertheless, a very small number of young women will embark on the adventure; they will have to display a lot of courage to succeed. Indeed, in spite of administrative problems (some schools outright refuse the registration of women), the outright hostility of their fellow men and the skepticism of clients, willpower, self-sacrifice and strength of character will be necessary to succeed in architecture. . And even if some follow this path as a couple or in a group, we can say that these are real pioneers. Most of them are also activists.
