Conference: The First Five Years of the Cultural Education Program “Latvijas skolas soma” – Celebrating 100 Years of the Splendid Palace Cinema

Continuing the tradition of getting to know the most important cultural and artistic institutions, teachers and program coordinators in municipalities and schools, as well as representatives of the cultural industry, will meet in the “Splendid Palace” cinema – one of the most magnificent and oldest European cinemas, which is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.

“This conference is designed as a stopping point for ourselves and a view from the outside on a long road, where we want to find out where we have arrived, whether everyone is present, who joined us along the way and who still needs to be addressed and invited along. The conference will meet both cultural and educational, as well as other professionals in the fields to evaluate what has been done and to be inspired for further work, so that, when everyone fulfills their duties, they help to deepen, expand and make more personal the relations of every Latvian student with the culture of their country,” says Aija Tūna, head of the cultural education program “Latvijas skolas soma”.

At the conference, the Minister of Culture of the Republic of Latvia Agnese Logina (“Progressives”), the Director of the Latvian National Cultural Center Signe Pujāte, the Councilor of the Union of Municipalities of Latvia on education and culture Ināra Dundure, as well as the President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvič and the Norwegian agency “Kultūras skolas soma” will be present at the conference. Greetings from Matias Hilmar Iversen, General Manager of (“Kulturtanken”).

Director, creative director and publicist Una Rozenbaum will look at culture from different aspects at the conference. 14. Member of the Saeima, chairperson of the Saeima Education, Culture and Science Commission Agita Zariņa-Stūre (“New Unity”) will seek answers to the question why education needs culture. Anda Laķe, professor of the Latvian Academy of Culture and head of the Institute of Culture and Arts, will present the results of the five-year evaluation of the cultural education program “Latvian school bag”.

Representatives of several cultural sectors will outline the role of various cultural expressions in the development of human personality and life in general – children’s book writer Luize Pastore will talk about the joy of reading, visual artist Eva Vēvere will tell about the connection between art and human well-being, while music reviewer, artistic director of Liepaja concert hall “Lielais dzintars” and Orests Silabriedis, the host of the “Klasika” program of Latvian Radio 3, will reveal the nuances of the experience of listening to music. Aija Tūna, head of the cultural education program “Latvijas skolas soma”, will talk about how to include various cultural expressions in the cultural events intended for students and how teachers can choose the most appropriate and high-quality event.

The role and interaction of culture and education in a broader context will be looked at by Jānis Vētra, professor of Riga Stradins University, and Renārs Liepiņš, creative director of advertising agency “EnterCreative”.

At the end of the day, those present will be delighted by a musical greeting from the “Rīga” orchestra.

Since the autumn of 2018, the cultural education program “Latvijas skolas soma” provides students with a state-paid opportunity to regularly get to know Latvian cultural values ​​and contemporary expressions in music, theater, dance, circus, visual arts, cinema, architecture, design, cultural heritage, literature and bookselling, connecting those with learning content. The “Latvian school bag” program is administered by the Latvian National Cultural Center.
