Conference on security in German stadiums – that’s what it’s all about

There are always discussions about safety in stadiums. Representatives from politics and football are now discussing it. Fans are not there – and are annoyed.

At a summit in Munich on Friday, politicians and representatives of German football will discuss the issue of security in the stadiums. Among those taking part in the meeting are DFL CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke, DFB President Bernd Neuendorf, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) and Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU).

The conference will focus on pyrotechnics that are banned in stadiums, the costs of police operations in connection with football games, the action against serious offenders and the file on “violent sports offenders”. This file records people who have attracted attention due to violence or criminal acts, particularly during football games, but also at other sporting events.

Politicians and football representatives want to talk about possible measures that can make the stadium experience even safer. However, fan representatives were absent from the meeting and clearly criticized this. “It is significant that, at the invitation of politicians, people are talking about and not with fan representatives,” said the fan interest group “Our Curve” of the German Press Agency.

The German Football League (DFL) and the German Football Association are significantly further along in this regard. Critical topics are also discussed with fans in fixed discussion formats, for example in the Fans and Fan Cultures Commission or in the club-fan dialogue.
