A conference is taking place in the French capital on Thursday, where representatives of more than 50 countries are talking about how to alleviate the suffering of civilians in the Gaza Strip.
The event was opened by French President Emmanuel Macron, who called for everything to be done to achieve a ceasefire and ensure aid organizations have the opportunity to reach the places most affected by the war.
“Today, the situation is serious and is getting worse every day. We have to work to protect civilians. To achieve this, we need an early humanitarian pause and we need to work on a ceasefire. We need to create the necessary space for humanitarian aid,” Macron said.
The President also stated that those gathered must learn from their mistakes and that the establishment of peace in the Middle East must not be postponed any longer.
“We must take the initiative and muster our strength to finally move towards a two-state solution where Israel and Palestine live side by side in peace and security,” Macron said.
“First and foremost, we must demonstrate that the creation of a Palestinian state serves Israel’s security,” the president added.
The Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority Mohamad Shtayeh also participated in the conference. He also demanded an immediate ceasefire from Israel and Hamas so that the civilians of Gaza could receive humanitarian aid.
Shtayeh said that Israel is resisting calls for a ceasefire because it wants to punish the Palestinians collectively for the October 7 attack by Hamas.
In addition, according to him, Israel will not be able to achieve its goal in this war – to completely destroy “Hamas”.
“Because Hamas is not only in Gaza. And Hamas is an ideology. It is not just a military structure or organization in Gaza. Hamas is also active in the West Bank, Lebanon and Syria, but the leaders of Hamas are in Qatar.
To announce that the goal is to destroy Hamas… It will absolutely not be possible because today there is a war against all Palestinians,” Stajeh said in an interview with France 24 broadcaster.
Israel has opened the humanitarian corridor for the fifth day in a row so that the civilians of the Gaza Strip can get safely to the south from the north of the territory. About 50 thousand people used this opportunity on Wednesday. Most of them went to the city of Hanyounis, but there they have access to very limited help.
Meanwhile, the Israeli army continued its strikes on the positions of the terrorist group “Hamas”. The Israeli army also announced on Thursday that it was observing “tactical and localized” humanitarian pauses in the Gaza Strip, which it said would be in place for a short period of time. The army statement emphasized that this did not mean a ceasefire.
The war between the terrorist group Hamas and Israel, which entered its second month, has caused the most suffering to more than 2 million civilians in the Gaza Strip.
70% of them have been forced to leave or have lost their homes due to the war. Hundreds of thousands of people do not have access to clean drinking water and nutritious food, and the hospitals that are still operating are overcrowded and short of medicine.
Until now, humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza have been very limited, as they can only go through one checkpoint on the border with Egypt. However, diplomatic efforts to increase the amount of humanitarian aid many times over do not stop.
CONTEXT:
Terrorists of the Palestinian Islamist group “Hamas” launched a surprise attack from the Gaza Strip on the morning of October 7. About 1,400 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed in the massacre.
Hamas militants also captured more than 200 people and took them to the Gaza Strip.
Israel declared a state of war in the country and launched extensive air and artillery strikes against Hamas targets in the group’s controlled Gaza Strip. Ground forces are also involved in the fighting.
Israel also enforced a complete blockade of the Gaza Strip for several weeks, cutting off electricity and water supplies to the territory. Trucks with international humanitarian aid have entered Gaza from Egypt through the Rafah border crossing in the south of the territory since October 21, but this is not enough to help all civilians in the Gaza Strip. Israel has continued to deny the introduction of water filtration equipment, as well as fuel, into the Gaza Strip.
