Coney Island shooting sends four to hospital

The New York Police Department reports that this afternoon, around 5 p.m. a shootout broke out at Coney Island, Brooklyn, which sent four people to the hospital.

In a press release, NYPD says that, for unknown reasons, a brown minival who was passing West 33rd Street and Mermaid Avenue, began shooting at a group of people.

The victims of that incident have not been identified, but it is known that one of them is in critical condition, another has serious injuries and the other two, minor.

This is what the NYPD had to say about the injured:

26-year-old man shot in the leg

17-year-old male shot in the torso

25-year-old man shot in the leg

Unidentified man shot in the leg

All were transferred to NYU Langone.

The investigation is ongoing.

Second shooting with multiple injuries in NYC

Just hours earlier, the NYPD reported that there was another shooting that left four injured this afternoon: Outside a Popeyes restaurant in the Bronx, four people were shot, one fatally.

The family of Luz Hernández finds no comfort in the murder of the Dominican teacher, who was last seen alive on Saturday, February 4, 2023, and was declared dead on February 7, when detectives found her body in a grave in New Sweater.

Through tears, Jenny Taveras, the deceased’s sister, explained to News 41’s Gary Menson that her sister was “the sweetest person anyone has ever met.” That is why they lived on the same block, since more than sisters they were “neighbors and best friends.”

Taveras says that her sister was so familiar that she decided to live on the same block as her mother, her two sisters, and even her sister-in-law and mother-in-law. “For her, family was everything.” She says they were always together and “everyone talked about the relationship she had with her sisters.”

And he describes her as a mother “concerned about her children, always clean, their food on time, the best education; she helped them a lot: children are very responsible. If she sat here (on the floor) on the floor they all sat around her. If she went to bed, all the children went to bed around her.”

“She was always nice to the boys. We are devastated,” said Luz Hernández’s uncle, José Acosta. Who added that she had an “innate power to converse with children.”

The 33-year-old teacher was also well-liked by her students and other teachers at the BelovED Community Charter School, where she taught. “She was a very good teacher,” said a spokesperson for that school, “a wonderful person who really cared for a lot of people.”

Hernández had worked at that school since graduating from college in 2017. In 2020-2021 she took maternity leave, but returned in 2022, with her own class. Likewise, she was about to finish her master’s degree in educational sciences.

Her family remembers her as a very fun woman, who liked not only to help her children study, she also took them to the water park, on different outings, and was always doing different activities with them and her whole family.

The family also says that Luz Hernández was married only once, to the father of her children, whom she had known since she was a teenager and with whom she emigrated from the Dominican Republic to New Jersey.

Since Tuesday they have had no contact with Luz’s husband and they ask him to come back, but he doesn’t show up, which makes them suspicious of him. “He did not kill a dog, he killed a sister, a daughter, an exemplary mother.”
