There are journeys that mark forever. For Amandine Gilliot, it was New York. It wasn’t the architecture or the musicals that conquered it, but the cookies of Levain bakery and the brunches of Clinton St. Baking. So, back in Lyon, she wanted to rediscover the taste of these dishes that she lacked and introduce them to the Lyonnais. This is how Coney Cookies was born (name in reference to Coney Island, Brooklyn neighborhood with the famous amusement park facing the ocean).
She starts by doing sugar cookies, shortbread cookies with personalized icing, and big cookies of 140 grams. Plump and soft treats, which quickly received the title of best cookies in Lyon. In her tiny boutique on rue Sergent Blandan, she also wanted to find the flavors of savory American breakfasts, pancakes, bacon and fried eggs … but that she could only offer once a month his premises were so tiny. But she was already nourishing the desire to open a bigger place to feast on afficionados of American cuisine. In November, his dream becomes reality.
Authentic, bold and generous
At the bottom of the slopes, rue Saint-Polycarpe, it has taken over a place from which every day large batches of cookies, cheesecakes, cinnamon rolls, shortbread … and for lunch, typical brunch and sandwich formulas come out. across the Atlantic. So to taste the whole menu, we preferred to go there twice rather than once. We started with pancakes, bacon & eggs. The bacon was crisp and the portion generous, the pancakes (three in number) large and fluffy (soft and light), served with real tasty maple syrup, and what’s more, organic.
Two days later, we tested the hot dog in its most traditional form: honey mustard, ketchup, pickle pickles and fried onions on an artisan sausage and soft bread… perfect. But the most beautiful surprise came from the BLT (abbreviation of bacon, lettuce and tomatoes). A sandwich whose composition asserts itself, between ingredients (the tomato being replaced by succulent candied tomatoes, because here we respect the seasons) and mayonnaise sauce spiced with chipotle. A perfect balance. We can also wait for the pastrami to return to the menu, just like the ” true “ mac and cheese… As Amandine says, “Yes, it will be fat and generous”. So what ?! Fat is life, right ?!
