Conductor Edgars Račevskis / Article

Edgars Račevskis was born on July 11, 1936 in Skrunda. He studied at Turlava Primary School, then at the Choral Conducting Department of Liepāja Music High School and Jāzeps Mediņš Riga Music High School. He continued his studies at the Choral Conducting Department of the Latvian State Conservatory, graduating from Andrejs Krūmiņš’s class.

He has worked as a conductor in the State Song and Dance Ensemble “Sakta” and in the State Academic Choir “Latvia”, and has been the chief choirmaster of the Latvian National Opera Choir. Artistic director and chief conductor of the choir of Latvian Radio Teodors Kalniņš for many years.

Maestro has founded and conducted several choirs of high artistic value in Latvia, as well as initiated and maintained cultural and historical events.

He founded and conducted the Riga Polytechnic Institute men’s choir “Gaudeamus”, Tukums district teachers’ choir “Vanema”, Riga Culture and Art Center “Small Guild” mixed choir “Sonore”, Riga Latvian Society House men’s choir.

Since 1970, as a multiple chief conductor, he has made an invaluable contribution to maintaining the tradition of the General Latvian Song and Dance Festival, which is always important for the people’s consciousness.

He has also done pedagogical work all his life: he has been a lecturer at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian State Conservatory, a professor, the head of the Department of Choral Conducting, as well as a professor at the Liepāja Pedagogical Academy.

He has been active in the field of composition since the 1990s; was an honorary member of the Latvian Composers’ Union.
