JawaPos.com – Lung cancer patients generally come to the doctor with a late condition or have an advanced stage. If it’s too late, the condition will get worse and healing will be more difficult.
Chairman of the Indonesian Cancer Foundation, Prof. DR. dr. Aru Wisaksono Sudoyo, Sp.PD-KHOM, FINASIM, FACP said as many as 80 percent of lung cancer patients came at an advanced stage, so the percentage of survival was lower. Therefore, it is very important to increase public knowledge about the risk factors, symptoms and special considerations of lung cancer treatment.
“So, we hope that people can prevent cancer by adopting a healthy lifestyle, not smoking, and doing early detection of cancer, because cancer found at an early stage is easy to treat and can even be cured,” he said in a YKI webinar with MSD, Friday (26/11). ).
Smokers are more at risk
Internal medicine specialist and consultant medical oncology hematology, dr. Ralph Girson Ginarsa, SpPD-KHOM, explained that in lung cancer there are several subtypes of NSCLC, namely adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and large cell carcinoma. Adenocarcinoma begins in cells that normally secrete a mucus-like substance and is usually found in people who smoke or have been smokers. But it is also found in people who don’t smoke, is generally found in women, and tends to be in people who are younger than other types of lung cancer. This type is found on the outside of the lungs and is likely to be found before it spreads.
The next subtype is squamous cell carcinoma which starts from the squamous cells which are flat cells in the lung airways. Patients with this subtype are closely associated with smoking habits, and tend to be found in the center of the lung near the bronchial tubes.
