Conditions are getting worse in Myanmar when Chinese factories are pillaged

Yangon

Action looting and arson Chinese factories in Hlaing Tharyar district in Yangon, Myanmar occurred on Sunday (13/3) local time. Chinese Embassy in Myanmar said many Chinese employees were injured and trapped during the looting and arson.

“Several Chinese business factories were looted and destroyed and many Chinese staff were injured and trapped,” the Chinese embassy said, without giving further details.

As reported Reuters, Monday (15/3/2021), the Chinese Embassy asked the Myanmar security to secure the situation immediately. In a Chinese embassy statement on Facebook, the situation after the attack on factories was “very severe” and Chinese citizens residing in Myanmar have also received warnings.

According to Myanmar Now media reports, a resident said three factories were set on fire in Hlaing Tharyar. It is unclear whether this includes two Chinese-financed garment factories that, according to Chinese state news CGTN, were set ablaze.

China became the target of anti-coup protesters because they were accused of not being as tough on a military takeover as Western countries have undertaken. At that time, China said that its priority was stability, while the coup was an internal affair of Myanmar.

The burning of Chinese factories was carried out because the demonstrators believed China had supported the Myanmar military. Beijing says people armed with iron rods, axes and gasoline have burned and damaged 10 Chinese companies – mostly clothing factories or warehouses – in Yangon. A Chinese hotel was also the target of the attack.

The Chinese embassy in Myanmar asked for help from the Myanmar government to stop the violence.

China urges Myanmar to take further effective steps to stop all acts of violence, punish the perpetrators in accordance with the law and ensure the safety of the lives and property of Chinese companies and personnel in Myanmar,” the Chinese Embassy said in a statement.
