Condemnation Everywhere After Politicians Burn Al-Quran in Sweden

Copenhagen

The leader of Denmark’s far-right party, Starm Kurs, Rasmus Paludan, burns copies of Al-Qur’an. A number of countries including Indonesia condemned the actions of Rasmus Paludan!

Beginning of Combustion

The Qur’an burning incident occurred on Thursday (14/4) local time. Rasmus Paludan, accompanied by the police, went to an open public space in South Linkoping and put down the holy book and burned it.

The arson was colored by protests. However, Rasmus Paludan ignored the protest.

Turkey-born politician Mikail Yuksel, who founded the Party of Different Colors in Sweden, said Islamophobic provocations from racist anti-Islam politicians under police protection continued in cities across Sweden.

Yuksel said Paludan specifically chose neighborhoods that were densely populated by Muslims and places near mosques for provocations.

“In Sweden, which defends human rights, freedom of religion and conscience with the highest pitch, the Koran is burned in Muslim circles under police protection,” said Yuksel.

He said local police were calling on Muslims to use common sense as their holy book was burned right before their eyes.

3 People Injured

Rasmus Paludan’s action led to demonstrations around the location. Three people were injured in this clash.

Reported by Reuters on Monday (4/18/2022), protesters displeased with Rasmus Paludan’s actions attacked police before planned far-right extremist demonstrations began. They took action because when they burned the Koran, Rasmus was escorted by the local police.

“Three people appear to have been hit by the reflection and are now being treated in hospital. The three injured people were arrested on suspicion of a crime,” police said in an online statement, adding none of the injuries were life-threatening.

In connection with the demonstration, as many as 26 people were arrested by the Swedish police. Police said eight people were arrested in the city of Norrkoping and 18 people were detained in the city of Linkoping.
