One of the most sensational cases of abuse in the Archdiocese of Cologne has found a canonical conclusion. Priest U., who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for multiple abuses, has been released from the clergy. At the request of Cardinal Rainer Maria Woelki, Pope Francis imposed this maximum penalty under canon law, as the archdiocese announced on Thursday. A priest punished in this way may not wear clerical clothing, conduct religious services, engage in pastoral work, or administer the sacraments.
