On April 9, 2009, a concert by the “Pirin” ensemble took place in Hall I of the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, dedicated to the Bulgarian intangible cultural heritage.
It was organized by the Permanent Representation of the Republic of Bulgaria to UNESCO and was held under the patronage of the Bulgarian Ambassador to France Irina Bokova and the Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura. In her welcome to the guests, Ambassador Irina Bokova emphasized the role of the UNESCO Convention for the Protection of Intangible Cultural Heritage in preserving the identity of peoples in a globalizing world. She pointed out that the Bulgarian people, inheritors of ancient cultures and civilizations, have managed to preserve their national traditions over the centuries and pass them on to the next generations by embodying them in our great folklore and ethnographic wealth. In the following performance under the title “Bulgaria sings and dances”, the ensemble “Pirin” presented a fascinating combination of Bulgarian folk songs and dances. Under the guidance of artistic director Petyo Krastev, choreographer Todor Bekirski, choir conductor Yolanta Lazarova and folklorist Georgi Garov, the performers from the ensemble presented with great professionalism a magical mixture of Bulgarian rhythms, colors and sounds. The event was attended by members of the UNESCO Executive Board, ambassadors and deputy permanent representatives in the organization, prominent representatives of the French political circles and the administration, as well as the deputy mayor of Blagoevgrad, representatives of the Bulgarian community in Paris, friends of Bulgaria. The audience wildly applauded the virtuoso performance of the singers and dancers in this captivating spectacle.
