Concert at Ahlem Memorial: Songs of Expulsion, Flight, and Being a Stranger

Songs about expulsion, flight and being a stranger

REGION (red). For Sunday, 16. April, 3pmloads the Ahlem Memorial for the concert one: The duo Mandos & Kaatz share a love of Yiddish music – especially songs and ballads from Eastern Europe. In the process, the two found out a lot about the history behind it: Between 1880 and 1914, around two million Jews emigrated from Eastern Europe to the USA via Hamburg and Bremerhaven. They fled pogroms and poverty from the tsarist empire and dreamed of the “Golden Land” of America. Inge Mandos and Klemens Kaatz bring the audience closer to the situation of displaced persons, characterized by longing, hope and the courage to survive, but also by sadness and despair. Inge Mandos leads through the program, sings and translates the songs with her warm and multi-faceted voice. Klemens Kaatz, an experienced arranger and interpreter, accompanies them on the piano and accordion. Admission is free.
