Concerns Rise over the Spread of Bed Bugs in France and Spain

Spain is concerned about the spread of…bed bugs“Which has spread widely in France in several places, including the Paris metro, cases, high-speed trains, and Charles de Gaulle Airport, according to the Spanish newspaper La Pangordia.

The newspaper pointed out that it is not Spain, but Mexico expressed its fears about the spread of these insects, and the health authorities put various colleges in the National Autonomous University of Mexico on alert due to the presence of these insects.

French health experts estimate that a tenth of French homes have had a bedbug problem in recent years, which typically requires a pest control operation that costs several hundred euros and must be repeated frequently.

The Paris City Council urged President Emmanuel Macron’s government to help combat the outbreak, including by creating a specific task force.

The French National Health Agency recommended that people check their beds in hotels when traveling and be careful when bringing used furniture or used mattresses into their homes, because bed bugs have a habit of nesting in mattresses, although they can also hide in clothes and luggage.

In Spain, residents of the town of Barakaldo, near the city of Bilbao, reported an infestation of bed bugs in their homes. Some experts even suggest that bedbug cases may have returned to levels not seen in Europe since before World War II.

In Mexico, students from several UNAM faculties, such as law or veterinary medicine, have reported the presence of bed bugs in classrooms and in the Mexico City metro.

Why do bed bugs multiply?

Bed bugs, which largely disappeared from daily life in the 1950s, have resurfaced in recent decades, primarily due to high population density and increased public transportation.

The United States ranked the cities that have the highest incidence of bed bugs, and in first place is the city of Chicago, and New York and Philadelphia follow the platform. Los Angeles saw the biggest jump this year, climbing seven spots into the top five, with Cleveland in fourth place.

Experts say the increase in bedbug cases is due to a perfect storm of causes, such as increased global tourism and the movement of people and luggage, along with rising temperatures due to climate change. In addition, these insects have gained immunity to many of the chemicals that try to eliminate them.

These small insects are flat and difficult to spot, as they are very easy to transport in personal items such as clothing and suitcases. Once they find a nesting place, their reproduction rate becomes alarmingly fast, facilitating their spread and exacerbating the problem.

Symptoms and bites

Bed bugs feed on the blood of humans and other warm-blooded animals. In addition to sucking blood, their bites can cause a number of skin symptoms, including skin irritation, redness, and an intense itching sensation. Commonly affected areas are the neck, hands, and extremities, although it is not uncommon for bites to appear on other parts of the body.
