Frequent flight accidents involving the 737 MAX series of passenger aircraft owned by the American aircraft manufacturer Boeing have raised concerns about their safety. On Friday (5th), an Alaska Airlines passenger plane in the United States had a door and window come off during flight. The model of the passenger plane involved was the Boeing 737 MAX 9. Last year, an airline in Hong Kong ordered 15 of this model of aircraft. Delivery could be as soon as this year. The company responded to Dongwang’s inquiry and stated that it was aware of the relevant accident and believed that Boeing and the FAA would handle it seriously and conduct a detailed investigation.
In March last year, shortly after Hong Kong resumed customs clearance with other parts of the world, a local airline and the American Boeing Company held a signing ceremony in Hong Kong. The local airline signed an order for 15 Boeing 737 MAX series model 737-9 passenger aircraft. It is expected to be between this year and 2027. It will be delivered during the period and will become the main model of the company’s fleet, in line with its mid- to long-term plan to develop international long-distance route services. In addition, due to the large cabin space of this batch of passenger aircraft, the local airline said that after receiving the new aircraft, it may introduce business class seats to improve service levels. The relevant signing ceremony was very grand, and many Hong Kong government officials were invited to witness it, including Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development Yau Ying-wah, Secretary for Transport and Logistics Lam Sai-hung and others.
Another model of the Boeing 737 MAX series, the 737-8, suffered two air crashes within six months, resulting in the global grounding of this model of passenger aircraft. Afterwards, Boeing modified the design of this type of passenger aircraft, and Hong Kong approved this type of passenger aircraft to fly in Hong Kong’s airspace early the year before last. When asked about the related air safety accidents, Boeing Commercial Airplanes President Standier, who attended the signing ceremony, said that the problem had been solved and difficult changes had been made. He described that the series of passenger aircraft had returned and was operating safely.
Hong Kong Airlines responded that the company’s fleet is entirely operated by Airbus and has not introduced Boeing passenger aircraft. Cathay Pacific and its subsidiary Hong Kong Express said they do not operate Boeing 737 MAX 9 passenger aircraft.
