Concerns Rise as COVID-19 Cases Surge in Lebanese Hospital and New Variants Emerge

“Lebanese Debate”

Rizk Hospital circulated to workers in all departments to take health precautions and to wear a face mask again after the increase in the number of infections with the Corona virus in the hospital, and an audio recording of an official in the hospital spread, which raised the concern of the Lebanese, that Lebanon is witnessing a rapid spread and an increase in the number of infections by about four times what it is. There have already been 17 cases in the hospital.

And the Ministry of Health had announced that Lebanon had recently witnessed an increase in cases that coincided with the tourist season and an increase in the number of arrivals to the country, but the recorded cases were mostly mild cases that did not suffer from complications and did not require hospitalization, but what happened in Rizk Hospital calls for concern with Increasing number of hospitalizations.

Is Corona really spreading 4 times faster than before? And where is the role of those concerned to put measures in place to limit its spread?!

In this context, the former head of the Parliamentary Health Committee, Assem Araji, confirmed that “there are two new variants of the Corona virus, the first is called “Iris”, and it appeared in the United States and Canada and spread to about 45 countries, and recently another variant appeared in Britain called “BA 2.86”. Pointing out that these two mutants are spreading rapidly.

In an interview with the “Lebanon Debate”, Araji said: “All information received from the World Health Organization, the United States and Britain indicates that the complications of these two variants are very slight, and the death rate is very low.”

He explained, “Viruses are constantly mutating from a scientific point of view, but so far there are no major concerns about these two mutants, and the rate of admission to hospitals is very low, whether in Lebanon or abroad.”

He pointed out that “until now there is no cause for concern about the new mutants, and the evidence for this is that the concerned parties and the Ministry of Health have not taken any measures due to the reassurances of the World Health Organization.”

In conclusion, he indicated that in “the months of September and October, infection cases may rise in Lebanon due to a change in weather, but even if cases rise, the virus is not as deadly and dangerous as it was in the past, so there is no need for concern.”
