Concerns raised by RIVM research on students’ illicit use of Ritalin and potential risks

One in twenty students sometimes uses drugs such as Ritalin without a doctor’s prescription, pale last year from research into their psychological health and substance use by the RIVM, the GGD and the Trimbos Institute.

That is dangerous, RIVM warns, because the medicines can have side effects. Users can suffer from insomnia and palpitations, but also from gloom and depression. Even suicide attempts sometimes seem to be related to the medication.

The researchers decided to conduct additional research. They monitor the levels of ritalinic acid, a substance in the medication, for a week. measured in the sewers of Amsterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven.

The results showed that the concentrations of ritalinic acid found approximately corresponded to the amounts of medication prescribed by a doctor to people with ADHD. The researchers therefore suspect that there is probably no illegal import of the substances at this time. It is more likely that users will pass on or resell their doctor-prescribed drugs.

Further research is needed to further substantiate the suspicions, says the RIVM.
