Concerns Over Proposed Increase in Hajj Pilgrimage Costs: Commission VIII Deputy Chairman Criticizes Government Proposal

Jakarta

Deputy Chairman of Commission VIII DPR RI PKB faction Marwan Dasopang criticized the Ministry of Religion’s proposal regarding the Cost of Organizing the Hajj Pilgrimage (BPIH) in 2024 to Rp. 105 million. Marwan also highlighted the proportion of 70% of costs charged to the congregation and 30% government subsidies.

“This government proposal, one, gives too much wind to the BPKH (Hajj Financial Management Agency), it doesn’t take into account the capacity of the congregation, from 90 million suddenly to 105 million, then the proportion is 70-30, that doesn’t look at the condition of the congregation at all,” said Marwan to journalists, Saturday (18/11/2023).

“The proportion made by the government is in the position of 73 million which will be paid by the congregation, 23 million which will be paid by BKPH, which is difficult,” he explained.

Marwan is worried that due to the large costs, many congregants will fail to leave haji. He emphasized that Commission VIII DPR would ask the government for a deeper explanation.

“I’m worried that many of our congregation will not go on the Hajj because they can’t afford to pay it off. That’s why we at Commission VIII have two things that we will look at, one is regarding where did the number 105 come from?” he said.

Marwan said that one of the government’s reasons for the increase in Hajj costs was related to the rupiah exchange rate. He said the government was referring to the US dollar exchange rate of IDR 16,000.

“Rp. 16 thousand is too pessimistic about the government’s ability to stabilize the rupiah, while our APBN sets the exchange rate at only 15 thousand. It has fluctuated recently, but it has never touched 16 thousand, that is too much of an underestimate of the government’s ability to stabilize it,” he said.

Second, the government’s reasons obtained by Marwan were related to the increase in prices for consumption and accommodation. He asked the government to bargain with vendors in Saudi Arabia.

“The government is proposing to increase prices, prices for transportation, consumption, accommodation. We want to ask why they are increasing and we ask that there must be an offer from a Saudi vendor, how much actually,” he said.
